Year 5 Macbeth Poetry Writing - March 22

Date: 22nd Mar 2022 @ 7:24am

On Friday, Year 5 had an enjoyable English lesson exploring Macbeth's 'Double, Double, Toil and Trouble' poem from the play Macbeth. This poem was used by Shakespeare to demonstrate the evil of the witches' potions as Macbeth approaches for a second time to learn his future.

We had a go at altering the poem and adding our own ingredients. Below are a couple of examples, one from each class.

Macbeth – Witch’s spell – Poem

Drop in horse’s nose,

Mix with pigs’ toes,

Rip of cat’s claw,

Stir with a dog’s paw,

Throw in a human’s wig,

Blend with the eye of a pig,

Bake the head of a snake,

Burn cauldron till warm as a steak.

  • Daniel, 5HK

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn and caldron bubble.

Add a leg of a dying dog;

Then put in a small, slimy frog.

Put in a crushed antler of a moose;

And drop in feathers from a goose.

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn and caldron bubble.

Cool it down with ears of rabbit;

Add a lot of books but don’t make a habit.

Then put in a tail of a bull;

After that, put in a cracked human skull.

Send this to someone you hate;

When they have drunk it, they’ll be on a Minotaur’s dinner plate.
