Year 3 - Understanding word classes and building sentences 9.6.22

Year 3 have enjoyed playing a sentence building game as part of their literacy learning. Groups started with the simple sentences:

She sang in the hall.

OR

He walked to the park.

After ordering their cards to create a grammatically correct sentence, each group had to follow the instructions to edit and expand on this. Take a look at the steps followed below and some of the interesting sentences that were built. Although each group started with the same ideas, their wonderful imaginations allowed them to finish with completely different ones!

1. Change the pronoun.

2. Change the verb.

3. Add an adjective.

4. Change a noun.

5. Add another adjective to create an expanded noun phrase. Do you need any more punctuation?

6. Add an adverb.

Challenge: Add a coordinating conjunction at the end of your sentence and finish this with a main clause that is plausible.
