Year 3 - Recognise and describe 2D shapes in maths 13.6.22
Date: 13th Jun 2022 @ 12:41pm
Year 3 have applied their learning on turns, lines and angles last week to recognising and describing 2D shapes today. Although most children are already familiar with the basic names of 2D shapes from KS1, it is important that mathematical vocabulary is used to build a deeper understanding. For example, we can describe a square as having four equal sides and four right-angles. This language is necessary when completing reasoning questions (as exemplified below) explaining how we know. Pupils began the lesson by exploring on their whiteboards and drawing their own 2D shapes made up of a given number of lines. They now know that:
Shapes with 3 straight sides are called |
triangles |
Shapes with 4 straight sides are called |
quadrilaterals |
Shapes with 5 straight sides are called |
pentagons |
Shapes with 6 straight sides are called |
hexagons |
Shapes with 7 straight sides are called |
heptagons |
Shapes with 8 straight sides are called |
octagons |
