Mysterious Roman Dodecahedron

As a slight brain-break from SATs revision, we turned our focus to the recent news about the mysterious Roman dodecahedron that was found 45 miles from here, over in Lincolnshire. We learnt that about 100 of these peculiar copper alloy objects have been found across Europe, and how they continue to stump archaeologists and historians as to what it actually is.
We thought that it could be:
- a fire-starting catapult ball;
- a candle holder;
- a coin holder;
- a device for connecting pipes to each other;
- an early shower head;
- a whistle, or a device that whistled as it was thrown;
- a flower stem holder;
- jewellery;
- a lantern or lamp,
- a door stopper;
- a religious artefact;
- a trap for catching enemy feet as they walked;
- an early 12-sided dice;
- a device that heated up the ground;
- a brake for a chariot;
- an astrological or astronomical artefact.
We had to stop with these ideas...not because we had run out, but because we had run out of time!
What do you think it is?
